Gene Ellis - Co-founder
Gene (@GeneLamarEllis) graduated from the California Maritime Academy in 2000 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. His first foray into the start-up world came four years earlier when he launched his first company, a graphic design firm called MicroDreams, in order to pay for school. Shortly after graduation, Gene rode the dot.com wave and accepted a position as a lead developer at Quokka Sports, a digital sports company. Here he worked on several high-profile web properties, such as NBC and WebTV. Later, he spent 5 years with the University of California Office of the President developing the virtual technology center, TLtC. After the successful launch and implementation of TLtC, Gene decided he was ready for another adventure and relocated out of California to Chicago. It is here, where a chance meeting, led to the formation of WebWalk, as well as a lifelong business partner and friendship. Gene has always had a passion for taking things apart and putting them back together, as well as pursuing efficiency through technology.
Claudio Felicioli - Lead Engineer
Claudio is a 2005 Computer Science graduate of Italy's elite Scuola Normale di Pisa. Additionally, Claudio completed his masters degree in 2004 and eventually his PhD in 2009 - both in computer science. His research activities have been mainly focused on Bioinformatics, Theoretical Biology, Computational Linguistics, and Web Data Mining. Claudio has worked as a researcher at the Pisa University and at the National Research Council of Italy. Although Claudio's passion is for anything theoretical, Claudio developed several software applications to assist his research work: L.webis (a distributed web crawler and graph analysis tools used for monitoring the italian web), QdC (a chemical reactions simulator for metabolic networks and signaling pathways, used to study photoreceptors in cells), Oracle (a language-independent tool for natural languages writing assistance for users with an impaired writing ability) and BpMatch (a tool for the fast computation of a segment mutation distance between biological sequences, used to analyze genomic evolution). Claudio entered the start-up world in 2011, then in 2012, with a by chance meeting, Claudio found friendship and the opportunity to be part in the WebWalk endeavor. Claudio enjoys games, good food, juggling, and hacking.
